Starting to plan the colour scheme I want for the @tonicgallerysalcombe exhibition in May. The theme is colour and light, I am going to use blues for the colour and polished copper for the light. First step is using watercolour paints to get my palette, the next step is using copper to do the test tiles to see which enamels and what temperature achieve the results I want.

Discover the world of enamelling in this inspiring two-day course, designed especially for absolute beginners. Starting from the very basics, you will be guided through the fundamentals of enamelling in a friendly and supportive environment. There will only be three students on this course.

On the first day, you will explore the different types of enamel and a wide range of application techniques. You will learn how to prepare both enamel and copper, before applying enamel using traditional sieving methods. Using hammers, stencils, and a rolling mill, you will experiment with adding texture and pattern to your copper surfaces. You will also be introduced to a variety of firing techniques, from hand-held torches to creative overfiring in the kiln.

On the second day, you will build on your skills by exploring more expressive approaches, including applying enamel in a watercolour style and working with wet packing techniques. By the end of the course, you will have a strong foundation in enamelling and the confidence to continue developing your own creative work.

You will be supplied with copper squares and shapes to work on and alll enamels will be supplied
Each day will be from 9am - 5pm

Cost of this weekend cost is £275.

Accommodation can be organised for an additional cost.

What a wonderful view to have breakfast and start filling in my diary for 2026. Next year I want to keep a photo/video journal of my creative practice, to show the ups and downs of being an artist/craftperson.

At the moment it’s all nice and calm until May. I am hoping to spend the first quarter of the year creating work for the second quarter, and the third creating work for the fourth. That’s the plan but since when do things go to plan 😆

I will be sitting down with my agent @hannah_andrews_arts_services to go through the plans when I get back to Cornwall.

I will be getting my cortisone injection into my hip on 22nd December so will be back full steam in the New Year getting ready for a group exhibition in May at @tonicgallerysalcombe, popping down to #Salcombe tomorrow to discuss the theme and colours.

This is a little reel of a morning in the studio with my medium kiln. I wanted to work on some smaller white pieces to bring out the greens, the problem is that you can’t see how much green there is and where until it cools down. This piece entitled Shades of White created lots of conversation. I have given it that title as it has only three shades of white glass enamel on the copper. All the colours are coming from the way the piece has been fired with each layer of enamel to pull the oxides from the burning copper into the glass.

The name was given to me by the art consultant @sigihill of the wonderful @newashgate gallery when they were visiting the Festival of Craft @farnhammaltingscraft. Funnily enough I had visited the gallery on Friday afternoon and bought a fabulous piece of Raku pottery by Bryony Rich which reminded me of the colours brought out in copper by heat. @narberth_pottery #rakufiring

Unlike fused glass and ceramics this is more like #hotglass work as the kiln is hot when you put items in and take them out.

The copper, silver, gold or steel is the “canvas” that we use for our enamelling. Ground enamel glass is what we use as our “paint”.

I will be adding classes soon to the @cornish_jewellery_studios website that you can book to spend a weekend in Cornwall learning to enamel bowls.

Every now and then I try something different with the way I fire my bowls in the kiln.

These three beauties were a complete surprise, I now need to repeat to see if I can replicate the effect. Two pieces are never identical but I want to see how close I can get. The bottom left sold to a lovely Derry man who lives in London. I am tempted to keep the other two.

I had been waiting for the kiln to heat up so I could do more test tiles of reds as I am trying to restore the enamel on an old coffee machine for someone.

It is something to spark joy when you look at it, a glimmer of beauty and to just be.

We have become a world of needing things to entertain us or have a function, I like to just have things around me that remind me of places I have been to, conversations I have had and the people who I have met.
